The Flora story

With a mission to 'add vitality to life' and strong focus on nutrition research, Unilever has been at the forefront of developing heart healthy choices in margarine spreads for over 40 years.

Pioneering heart healthy spreads

Negative impact of saturated fats on heart health was firmly established in the 1950s. Unilever responded to this in 1964 by launching Flora polyunsaturated margarine spread, the healthy alternative to butter and lard which are both high in saturated fats.

Since then Flora products are continually being developed in line with new scientific knowledge.

Leading the way in spread technology

During the 1990s scientific research established the negative effect of trans fatty acids on heart health. As a result of this research, in 1996 Flora became the first spread to be virtually trans fat free.

Introducing plant sterol enriched foods

A more recent addition to the Flora product line is the range of Flora pro-activ plant sterol enriched foods, which have been proven to actively reduce cholesterol absorption.

Flora pro-activ spread was launched In 1999, and was the first plant sterol enriched product on the New Zealand market.

The range has been extended and now includes Light, Ultra Light and Olive oil blends.

Today pro-activ range of spreads are available in over 30 countries worldwide.
